Title: Burning success

Jessica Mauboy's first number one single may be titled Burn, but the reality is that she's on fire.

In 2006, the nation watched the Darwin teenager come runner up to Damien Leith in Australian Idol and despite releasing an album of songs from her Idol journey and replacing Ricki Lee Coulter in the Young Divas, Jessica has mostly existed under the radar until suddenly in November last year she burst forth into the public mindset with her debut solo single Running Back.

When Jessica, who was on the Coast on Thursday to promote her album, makes a debut single she doesn't do things in halves, Running Back featured American rapper Flo Rider as a special guest on the track no doubt helping the single reach number 3 in the ARIA charts and selling more than 35,000 units.

But if there was a thought in anyone's mind that it was Flo Rider rather than Jessica who caused the success, those doubts were quickly squashed when Burn peaked at number 1 last week knocking Lady GaGa's Poker Face from the top spot where it had been dominating the charts for a number of weeks.

Burn's position at the top of the charts means that Jessica has actually out charted one of her Idols Beyonce has only managed to make it to number 5 on the ARIA charts with her latest release Single Ladies.

"I love Beyonce, she is a person I look up to and have been inspired by. People like her make me feel creative," Jessica said.

"Growing up in Australia I was more influenced by American RnB because that's what I was listening too.

"For me there was no Australian RnB to listen to."

Now, with the release of Been Waiting Jessica has provided an Australian alternative to the American RnB music that floods the country, but she admits it came with it's risk.

"I did have doubt at the start but I thought 'what the hell, lets just do it' and if people like it they like it," she said.

"For me the best thing was I kept grounded, and I had my family around me helping me make the right decisions."

And Jessica attributes so much of her success and who she is to the influence from her family and like any good girl from the country, as soon as they found out she had topped the charts, her dad took her fishing.

"We didn't catch anything that day, but I got a number one single, so you can't have everything I guess," she laughed.
