AUSTRALIAN Idol judge Kyle Sandilands is suing Channel 7 for defamation.
Sandilands has launched the action after a report this year on Today Tonight about him and girlfriend Tamara Jaber.
The program was about the music industry and focused on Jaber's single, Ooh Ahh, which was widely panned by critics but still saw airplay on Austereo stations around the country.
Sandilands is alleging that the report hinted that he behaved dishonestly in promoting the single and using his position as Jaber's partner improperly for the single to get airplay.
He has claimed both the promotion of the Today Tonight story and the item by Glenn Connley defamed him.
The case is likely to go to court next year, unless a settlement is reached.
Sandilands recently told the Herald Sun: "I can understand people think I might be playing her song when I'm not supposed to be.
"That would be unfair. It's my record company, I own it with my business partner.
"But he runs it, I really just look at the monthly board reports.
"And fund it.
"It still has to get songs added to radio like everyone does. Ooh Aah was on 67 radio stations."
Sandilands said that Jaber was hurt by the claims.

Big welcome home NOTHING has been finalised, but expect some sort of homecoming for Bendigo's Australian Idol winner Kate DeAraugo.
Kate hasn't been back to Bendigo since winning Idol and told The Eye she was desperate to go home and thank everybody.
Plans are in place for some sort of reception for DeAraugo.
The Eye is still getting emails and calls from people in Bendigo complaining about the voting.
It could turn out to be a curse -- Sony BMG is putting a lot of effort into fellow Victorian Lee Harding, and he could be the one who may have the longer career of the two.
DeAraugo will perform at Carols by Candlelight, and met host Daryl Somers last week.

Keeping low NATALIE Zahra, the 17-year-old Australian Idol contestant who probably was unfairly booted off the show, was a little cagey when approached by an Eye spy at Sydney nightclub Arq last week.
We were wondering why she didn't want to be in a photo, asking our spy if they were from the media, but then we figured it out.
At 17, Zahra should not have been in the club at all.
