Despite pulling off a cool lounge-star alter ego with sizzling hot vocals (and gyrations) for standards week, small-town Saskatchewan boy Tyler Lewis was eliminated from Canadian Idol Tuesday night.
Tyler's ouster came after a series of crowd-pleasing performances by crooner Tony Bennett and paves the way for next week's final showdown between Quebecer Eva Avila and Newfoundland's Craig Sharpe.
The results came as a surprise to many, including the final two, who both seemed as though they were preparing for the worst while awaiting the results at centre stage.
In recent weeks, Lewis had earned accolades from the judges for his constant improvement in both his singing skills and his ability to rule the stage -- and has become a favourite with female viewers along the way.
Host Ben Mulroney was quick to remind Lewis that his learning curve would ensure success in the rest of his career.
"You come from a town of 400 people or so (but) today you are a star to millions of Canadians," he said after revealing the results. "Your appeal has grown each and every week that you've been here, and no more so than last night when you opened up and showed us just who Tyler Lewis is."
The week's performances, where Lewis smoothed out his rocker edge and slicked back his curly mane, were indeed unique among the rest of the season.
During his first song, "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody," Lewis shook his hips seductively. While singing "It Had to Be You," he casually thanked the band midway through the song in true Vegas style.
He repeated his appreciation for the players Tuesday night during his performance of "It Had to Be You," which judge Zack Werner said was the best of the three given by the competitors that show.
"You were the star of the show, hands down, man," said Werner, referencing the success of the Top 3 competitor in 2004. "The fact is, in great Hedley/Jacob Hoggard tradition, coming third can be a rocket to success."
After going from an audition where the judges told him he needed new pants to placing third on a show watched by millions, Lewis wasn't complaining about the timing of his exit. He smiled broadly while delivering his final song, taking his last moments behind the microphone to say hello to his niece and nephew back home.
"This competition has totally blown my expectations out of the water," he said. "I came here looking for a chance. I've come a lot farther than I ever thought I could. Thank you everybody for the ride of a lifetime."
