RIDING high after his debut hit single Wasabi blitzed the charts, Lee Harding took time out to answer questions from his fans, exclusively through NEWS.com.au
Wasabi spent five weeks at No.1 on the ARIA charts, selling over 100,000 copies and the 23-year-old hasn't stopped yet. His new single Anything For You is the second cut from his debut album What's Wrong With This Picture?
The 23-year-old self-styled singer wants to set the record straight right here on his image, his music and what he thinks of his fans.
Q. Since you've become a role model to some of the teenagers and kids around Australia, do you feel that you have a responsibility towards them? Ashley, VIC
A. Definitely. I've absolutely got to be on all the time and be aware of things around me. I love the fact that I'm a role model to kids, considering someone with my look. Some parents wouldn't be too happy their kids look up to me.
Q. How would you describe your image? e.g. punk, purely fun, an attempt to relate to those 'tweens' despondent with conformity? AJ
A. I've never actually referred to myself as a 'punk'. That was mainly from Idol. I have a pop-punk style and I dress the way I want to do, without any particular style in mind.
Q. Would you please record and release your version of Tainted Love (by Soft Cell). It rocked! David G
A. I can't. It was The Living End's version. So, if you're looking for that particular version, get theirs.
Q. How did u really feel when u were kicked out of Idol, and what was ur feeling when Emily didn't win. I think you should have come runner-up. Mutley
A. I was proud of Kate, that she won. I was happy when I went out; I didn't think I'd get as far as I did.
Q. If you go expose your music to any country in the world, which country would it be? Tamara
A. Japan. There's a big market over there for songs like Wasabi.
Q. He Lee, just wanna know, who are your idols? Who would you like to do a song with in the near future? Courtney S
A. Chris Cheney from Living End, I'd like to write a song with him. I don't really have an idol, but if I had to pick one: Tommy Lee.
Q. When you start to write your own songs, what type of themes will you write about? Elyse D
A. Funny enough, that's exactly what we're discussing at the moment: writing styles. We're working on a few themes, but we haven't decided on anything yet.
Q. What's ur fav band at the moment? Is it Motley Crue or is it still Fall Out Boy? Joanna
A. Fall Out Boy still. Oh, and Panic! At The Disco.
Q. Sup Lee!! Can u sign my "LEE SHOES" after your gig at the Wollongong Town Hall?!?! PLZZZ!! Joanna
A. Definitely. I'll try to remember *writes Joanna's name down*
Q. Hey Lee! I was wondering what sort of places you will be visiting on your upcoming national tour - I don't live near any major cities and I wanna catch you live! * * shel * *
A. We'll be getting to a lot of country town that don't normally get a lot of gigs their way, so look out.
Q. Who did you enjoy meeting the most at the MTV AVMA's and why? Kayla J
A. Russell Crowe ... oh, End Of Fashion ... they were really cool.
Q. Which shop do you like better: K-Mart or Target? Peggy
A. It would probably have to be Target.
Q. What's the worst song you've ever heard? Peggy
Push Th' Little Daisies, Ween.
Q. What is the strangest and best thing you have gotten from a fan so far? Mel
A. I get a lot of teddies and letters. And g-strings.
Q. Lee, do u wear boxers or briefs? Mandi
Boxers, but the cotton type, not silk. And they've got to have moshing room.
Q. Have you always believed in yourself? Do you make an effort to retain such a positive attitude? Priscilla
A. Definitely. From a certain age, I've always copped a lot of crap at school. And from then on, I always believed in myself and kept going from there.
Q. Have you ever vacuumed your hair to get the fish effect? Sarah B
A. I've never even vaccumed the floor. I use gel tho.
Q. What do you dislike most about your job? Jennifer
A. Absolutely nothing. I love everything about it.
Q. Lee, did you decorate your dunlop volleys yourself? Are you doing a concert in Melbourne and what football team do you support? Alicia
A. No, I didn't decorate (my shoes) myself, yes Melbourne will be one of my stops and in the AFL I go for the Swannies.
Q. Is your drummer Mickey OK? Bre
A. Yeah, he's fine ... a little bit sore.
Q. What's been your most exciting event since leaving Idol? Jules
A. The MTV Awards.
Q. Hey Lee-Lee, I wanted to ask you, can you give me some advice for my singing career? KonKon
A. Go to singing lessons, practice and believe in yourself.
Q. How tall ARE you? Maggie
A. I don't know ... I'm just under 6ft, I think. But I don't think I'm that tall anymore.
Q. How much control do you actually have (personally) over the artistic direction of your music/lyrical content? Michael
A. After Idol, I decided to hold back lyrically, but I have a lot of freedom on an artistic level.
Q. Lee - why are you encouraging kids to dress as emo's? Rae
A. I don't dress emo and I'm not encouraging anyone to dress like me. This is just who I am: I dress like this.
IDLE GOSSIP (From Sydney Confidential)
HE'S only been on the scene five minutes but Idol's reluctant flagbearer of punk Lee Harding is already playing the rock star. A Sydney Confidential spy spotted the green-topped reality show export, who is on an eight-date NSW tour, engaging in some classic lead singer behaviour on a flight from Melbourne to Sydney on Thursday.
Having tossed down a couple of bourbon and Cokes, Harding set about conquering a golf game on his portable PlayStation.
His swing must have been on because he had to be told three times by a flight attendant to turn the game off before landing, telling her "it's not like it's going to bring the plane down".
Anything for You, the second single for Lee debuted at No.23 on the ARIA charts. His debut album, What's Wrong With This Picture?, leaves the Top 20 this week after selling a touch over 16,000 copies so far.
CRASH TOUR by Shoba Rao (From MX)
WHEN the boys from Kid Courageous first met Lee Harding at the ARIA Awards after-party, they swapped makeup and clothes tips.
But they also had a mutual desire to play together to a sell-out crowd.
Now that opportunity is at hand.
They join Harding as the headline act on this year's Crush Goes Live music tour.
Kid Courageous lead guitarist Patrick Ricapito said they would play songs off their new album Dear Diary, which will be released on May 6.
Ricapito loved talking to fans who show him how they've tried to mimic his guitar playing with air-guitar moves.
But after performing, the band enjoys a quiet beer before things get really wild.
"We've already spoken to Lee's band on this tour, and it's going to be a big party after we play, but I'll need a strong coffee to recover," he said.
